Since it is a leap year, I decided to take a leap of faith and to finish my first knitting project! It turned out to be quite an enjoyable evening, spending my time knitting while watching a movie. I decided to finish my first knitting project today since yesterday I put in 2 hours and today I put in roughly around 3 hours. Knitting is very time consuming and it takes a lot of time before you can start to see results. After knitting for 2 hours straight and barely seeing results makes me very frustrated! I decided today was the day that I was going to finish it and start a new knitting project.
As you can see, there are definitely some flaws in this piece, but overall it is very sturdy and there are not too many holes in it! I am very proud of what I have accomplished and I am more than excited to start a new knitting project!
Above is a short video of what my finished knitting project looks like and a few comments about my journey doing this first project.
I watched a video to help me figure out how to knit; how to start, how to do the in-between, and how to finish. This video was very helpful since it showed everything step by step and demonstrated how to do it slowly, and quickly. The part I found to be the most frustrating was the Cast-Off. I messed up twice doing the cast off and it is evident in my “blanket”. I had to be very precise and very patient when it came to cast-off and once I got the hang of it I started to go too fast and then I messed up. Knitting is something that takes time and patience, and it is really helping me become more patient.
One thing the video never told me was what I am supposed to do with the two strings on both ends of the “blanket”. I found an article on WikiHow which stated to just simply tie a knot and trim off any remaining string. I am a little hesitant to do that, since I do not want my knitting project to unravel. I tied several knots in both ends, but I am still nervous as to whether I should trim the ends or not. If any of you have any thoughts or ideas as to whether trimming the strings is a good/bad idea, please let me know!

I love that this is a ‘Barbie Blanket’ – super cute! It looks like you’ve spent a lot of time and definitely have some good reasoning behind finishing this project (leap years are great!) I also really love that you talk about some of the ‘roadblocks’ you’ve had that often videos don’t teach us. It’s a great way to show us your learning and how you overcome barriers. Great work!

Thanks Kayla! Whenever I came across a ‘roadblock’ I had to search for a way to complete my project. It’s definitely a learning experience, and I realized that you can’t always find what you need in one spot!
